January 2024: Betty is a sixty two year old mother living with her adult and grandchildren in an extended family household.  Her husband’s age and health prohibits him from helping with the subsistence farming activities.  Betty sells palm wine and grows a garden to provide for herself and her family.  Her adult children also do subsistence farming.  Betty’s family is unified in their decision to earn more money to build a larger and better house (they currently live in a crudely constructed earthen mud home with thatch roofing).  Betty was given an economic development grant to purchase her own palm trees so the harvested palm wine could be sold wholesale.
