January 2024: Seventy-year-old Hellena should be taken care of by her extended family. Cultural norms and practices dictate the elderly should have assurance of support as they age and can no longer work. There are no national or otherwise social service assistance options for poor elderly individuals, so the extended family assumes this responsibility. Hellena’s family could not sustain her support, and she must discern ways to support herself in spite of her declining health and elderly status.
