JOSEPHINE: S281-SOP

November

2023

Seventeen-year-old Josephine proudly moved up to the fifth grade! Balancing her roles as a student, mother, and granddaughter, she demonstrates remarkable dedication. Living with her grandmother, who provides invaluable support in caring for her baby while she attends school, Josephine remains steadfast in her aspiration to become a teacher one day.

Sixteen-year-old Josephine began last school year with a pregnancy and could not complete school.  This is often the fate of older students living in rural Liberia.  Cultural practices of early traditional marriages brings about teenage pregnancies.  The downside to this is that pregnant girls cannot remain enrolled in school….a “law” that women groups are trying to change in Liberia.  Josephine had a little girl and she is looking forward to going back to school to complete fourth grade. Thanks to GPA’s amazing sponsor network for giving Josephine a second chance to pursue her education.  She still wants to be a teacher. Sponsored by:  Scott LaCourse

2019

Thanks to the generous donation from Mariner and Kaylie Hernandez, Josephine has been re-enrolled into school for the 2019/2020 school year. She started a small business selling candy and fruits to the community during her free time to help pay for food for her and her grandmother.

We are pleased to announce that Josephine was promoted to the 2nd grade for the 2018/2019 school year. Jolene and Olivia Ibeling, thank you for your sponsorship and giving your student a gift of education through Girl Power Africa.

Meet Josephine, who has been generously sponsored by Jolene and Olivia Ibeling.  She is 11 years old and in the 1st grade this year.  Josephine lives in Sopea, Liberia with her grandmother. Josephine’s parents left her with her grandmother years ago and they never came back.  Her grandmother is unemployed and could not afford to send Josephine to school on a regular basis.  She hopes to be a teacher when she grows up.
