HELENA: S331-BAR

Helena was promoted to the fourth grade!  Her favorite subject is math. Her teacher reports she’s very smart and a good student. She often helps tutor her classmates and has a positive attitude. She still wants to be a teacher one day and continues to reside with her aunt.  Sponsored by: Patty Glennon

Please note: Helena’s hair was shaved off due to the following reason: In some parts of Liberia, women, especially first daughters and wives, are known to shave off their heads when grieving their husbands, mothers, fathers, and grandparent’s death, as a sign of respect to the dead and as a new beginning. Helena’s grandmother passed away about 2 months ago. She is now living with her aunt. Keep Helena in your heart & prayers.

Meet Helena, who has been generously sponsored by Patty Glennon. She is 9 years old and in the kindergarten-1 this year. She lives in Barpa, Liberia with her grandmother. During Helena’s interview, she told Girl Power Africa in Liberian English: “My Ma en Pa deh deform en deh nah wokin. Deh nah have way for sening us to school. I live weh my granma en she nah workn”. (Translation: My mother and father are deformed/disabled, and they are not working. They do not have a way to send us children to school. I am living with my grandma and she’s not working). Helena hopes to be a teacher when she grows up.
